Prime Minister Andrew Holness says Jamaica is facing a shortage of skilled workers and could be forced to import labour if the gap is not closed.

Speaking at the ground-breaking for the Riu Aquarelle hotel in Trelawny, Prime Minister Holness noted that the labour shortage is particularly acute in the construction sector.

He said while the labour shortage is a good sign for the economy, if it is not solved quickly, then it could become a major problem.

Mr. Holness said there are many young people in the population that can be brought into the labour force.

He noted that the human employment and resource training trust, heart, has been put on alert, as it regards the country’s training needs.
