Prime Minister Andrew Holness has indicated that the government intends to hold the local government election by February next year.

The Local Government Election, which is constitutionally due every four years, was last held in November 2016.

It was initially postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Months later, the government announced that the election will be further postponed, because of inadequate funds to cover the cost.

The election becomes due on February 28, 2024.

Opposition Leader Mark Golding had threatened to take the government to court, if it postpones the election yet again.

However, Prime Minister Andrew Holness says his administration, intends to fulfil its constitutional requirement, by holding the election when due.
