Former parliamentarian Jolyan Silvera who has been charged with the murder of his wife Melissa, has been remanded until Thursday, February 8.
The 52-year-old appeared in court in downtown Kingston, today.
The media was barred from entering the courtroom following an order by the judge.
She, however, gave the assurance that family members and the media will be permitted to attend hearings in the matter at a later date.
The murder case was transferred from the St. Andrew Parish Court after the Director of Public Prosecutions entered a voluntary bill of indictment paving the way for the case to be tried without a preliminary enquiry in the parish court.
King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie is representing Mr. Silvera.
He told reporters that the case file is incomplete.
Mr. Champagnie reiterated that Mr. Silvera maintains that he is innocent.
He urged members of the public to exercise some form of restraint in their theories, and bear in mind Mr. Silvera’s children.
Melissa Silvera was found dead at her home in St. Andrew on the night of November 10, last year.
It was first reported that the 42-year-old died in her sleep of natural causes, but a postmortem examination revealed that there were at least three bullet fragments in her body.
The police launched an investigation into the case.
Mr. Silvera was charged last Friday with his wife’s murder.
