Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has declared that the island is now experiencing an outbreak of dengue fever.
Tufton made the disclosure at an emergency press conference at his offices in New Kingston on January 3, 2019.
He revealed that 123 cases were recorded in December 2018.
The figure includes suspected, presumed and confirmed cases.
He said that the number surpasses the outbreak threshold, which is 96.
Tufton pointed out that December was the first time that dengue cases climbed beyond that mark.
Additionally, the health minister disclosed that in 2018 the country recorded seven suspected cases of dengue-related deaths.
Tufton said two of the cases have since been confirmed.
