President of Haiti Jovenel Moïse was assassinated at his home this morning by a group of armed individuals.
His wife, Martine, who was seriously injured in the attack, later died at hospital according to local media.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed shock at the what he described as the tragic passing of Moïse.
In a message posted to Instagram, Mr Holness said he found President Moïse to be a man committed to seeing Haiti take her place in the world.
Jovenel Moïse, 53, had been in power since February 2017, after his predecessor Michel Martelly stepped down.
