With reported cases of Leprosy in the Caribbean, the Medical Association of Jamaica MAJ, is urging citizens to be vigilant, but not to panic.

Leprosy also known as Hansen’s Disease, is a chronic infectious disease.

It affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosal surfaces of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes.

Concerns have been raised about the disease, as cases have been detected in Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and St. Lucia.

MAJ President Dr. Lesley Meade, says for Leprosy to be transmitted, there must be long contact.

He said because people travel often, it is likely the disease could spread.

He noted that medical doctors should be alert and note any sings that may indicate that a patient has Leprosy.

Dr. Meade says persons should also practice good hygiene, to help prevent the spread of Leprosy.
