One taxi group has supported the Opposition’s renewed call for the government to put measures in place to address the runaway fuel cost.

Yesterday Opposition Leader Mark Golding accompanied by scores of supporters, delivered an order drafted under the Provision of Collection of Tax Act to Financial Secretary Darlene Morrison at the Finance Ministry.

It called for the capping of the ad valorem Special Consumption Tax SCT on petroleum products, where the oil price of Jamaica’s purchases exceed US$67.50 per barrel

Mr. Golding says a cut in the gas tax will ease the burden on motorists.

President of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services TODSS Edgerton Newman agrees, noting that the association has been calling for this removal since 2016.

He is calling on Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke and Prime Minister Andrew Holness, to consider reducing the SCT on fuel.
