The Senate has approved amendments to the Representation of the People Act that will allow local government elections to be postponed for another 12 months, with elections to be held no later than February 28, 2023.
Piloting the Bill Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, stated that the decision was made not to hold the election at this time due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
She went on to say that holding an election at this time would put the country’s public health at risk, especially since COVID-19 numbers are on the decline.
