Jamaicans are being urged to exercise heightened vigilance and care, as the Saharan Dust extends over the Caribbean region.

Originating over northern Africa, Saharan Dust is the mixture of sand and dust from the Sahara Dessert and is especially common during the period of May to August annually.

The Saharan Dust is characterized by a spike in air borne micro particles, known to aggravate health issues, particularly respiratory illnesses including asthma.

Hazy conditions result in stable air, with reduced rainfall activity.

Its impact on Jamaica is expected to be mostly concentrated on Saturday and Sunday and is likely to remain for another few days until about Tuesday of next week.
