Prime Minister Andrew Holness says countries in the Western Hemisphere cannot allow a civil war to begin in Haiti, even as the security forces grapple with gang violence.

The security concerns in Haiti were discussed by regional leaders and international partners at a meeting in Kingston yesterday.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the risk of a civil war in Haiti has become much more serious.

However, he said this should not happen with the longstanding democratic tradition and reputation of this side of the hemisphere.

Mr Holness said while the discussions involve other parties, the people of Haiti deserve to determine their destiny.

He noted that yesterday’s meeting must lead to action as the situation worsens by the day.
