Fans were left disappointed following Maroon 5’s Super Bowl half time show, which also sparked controversy at the end.

Viewers took to Twitter to voice their disappointment at what many have described as a lacklustre 13-and-a-half-minute performance headlined by the pop-rock band and backed by rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi from Outkast

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine kicked off proceedings with songs Harder to Breathe and This Love, before Scott was introduced to the stage in a brief clip featuring SpongeBob SquarePants character Squidward.

The inclusion of the animated series in the halftime entertainment served as a tribute to the show’s creator, Stephen Hillenburg, who died in November, but fans were left disappointed that the clip was cut short.

Levine then progressively stripped, from a long black coat, to a tracksuit, to a tank top and finally to a bare chest, as he brought proceedings to an end with Sugar and Moves Like Jagger.

The irony of Levine purposely baring both nipples, considering the outrage that followed Janet Jackson for revealing just one during her almost career-ending performance at the same event with Justin Timberlake in 2004, was not lost on viewers, who later took to twitter.

Months of controversy preceded this year’s Super Bowl event, after a number of musicians, including Cardi B and Rihanna, turned down the slot in solidarity with former quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016 after he knelt during the national anthem to protest police brutality.
