The Color Purple exceeded box office expectations when it premiered in theaters on Christmas Day.

According to Variety, the musical remake of the 1985 classic pulled in $18 million from 3,152 theaters in North America — the largest Christmas Day opening for a film since 2009 and the second-biggest Christmas Day opening of all time.

The Color Purple, an adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name, boasts an ensemble cast that includes Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Ciara, Fantasia Barrino-Taylor and more.
