Officials have determined that lack of oxygen caused a recent fish kill, in Portmore, St. Catherine.

Last week, residents of Dawkins Pond in Bridgeport, Portmore, alerted the National Environment and Planning Agency NEPA, to the fish kill.

NEPA’s Pollution Response Team, along with representatives from the National Fisheries Authority, the JCF Marine Police and the JDF Coast Guard, conducted investigations.

Samples of the dead fish, as well as the sea water, were taken to the lab for analysis.

In an update, NEPA stated that upon conclusion of its investigations, the agency has surmised that the fish kill, was due to low oxygen levels in the water.

It says the cause of death is attributed to eutrophic conditions associated with an al-gal bloom and oxygen depletion following recent rainfall and the discharge of stormwater into a confined area of the Dawkins Pond.
