Liz Truss will become the new British prime minister on Tuesday after members of the Conservative Party chose her to succeed Boris Johnson as the party’s leader on Monday. After Johnson visits Queen Elizabeth II to formally resign, the former foreign secretary will start her new position in a ceremonial capacity.

Rishi Sunak received 43% of the votes from Conservative Party members, giving Truss a narrower victory than anticipated with 57% of the vote.

The new prime minister will inherit a cost-of-living crisis, the aftershocks of Brexit, a war in Europe and dropping support for the Conservatives in the opinion polls.
