Is There Only A Select Number Of Jamaican Artistes Who Have Made A Musical Impact Worldwide?

The question follows a statement made by Popcaan on Thursday on Instagram. The Dancehall artiste, in a lengthy post, appealed to Dancehall and Reggae artistes to work harder to gain a wider, international audience.

“Dancehall/reggae reggae/Dancehall let’s try to work harder to make our music more appealing to the wider audiences worldwide, we have so much talented artist on our island but our problem is sometimes we have more ego than hits and it will never work”

While he did not name any specific artistes, he claimed that many local artistes spend a greater amount of time releasing violent songs which may never make it to the Billboard Charts.

Despite Popcaan’s appeal, there have been Jamaican artistes who have made the Billboard Charts to include Sean Paul, Shaggy, OMI and new Reggae sensation Koffee.

Also, foreign media entities, over the years, have identified a number of Jamaican artistes as having global impact and fan-base. Just this year, Fox 5 News York acknowledged Vybz Kartel as King of the Dancehall with a global fan base.

So Ziptocrats, which artistes is Popcaan speaking about? Is there only a select number of Jamaican artistes who have made a musical impact worldwide?
