For the first in a long time, the Government does not owe the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) for street lighting.
This is as the $2.1 billion balance owed to the light and power company, has been cleared. In fact, the Government has paid the JPS the more than $9 billion it owed for street lights during the current financial year that ends on March 31.
Finance Minister, Dr. Nigel Clarke, made the disclosure as the House of Representatives approved the Third Supplementary Estimates for the 2018-2019 fiscal year, which reflect total Government expenditure of $802.6 billion.
The figures indicate no deviation between the expenditure outturns projected in the second 2018-2019 Supplementary Estimates, which were approved in January 2019, and the third.
Dr. Clarke, who tabled the document on March 20, explained that the third Supplementary Estimates represent a re-allocation of programmed expenditure from areas where provisions had been made, but those monies were not yet been spent. There are just two days left in the financial year.
