The Department of Correctional Services DCS says it is aware of a proposal letter in the public sphere, written by dancehall artiste Ninja Man, which was addressed to the Prime Minister, Minister of National Security and the Leader of Opposition, concerning rehabilitation programmes while incarcerated.

According to Ninja Man, who was found guilty of murder on November 20, 2017, many persons in the prison system would do better with ways to rehabilitate them to return to the general population so they can break the cycle of crime.

The artiste also said that the present jail system does not have any mechanisms to rehabilitate prisoners who are from various professions but instead are just detained, wake up, get fed, play football, and go back to lock up.

The DCS however highlights that several of the recommendations in Ninja Man’s letter, are already being undertaken within the different institutions.

Additionally, the DCS states that, efforts to reduce recidivism, a number of the recommended academic and vocational training, as well as life skills, mentorship, sports, therapy, and spiritual guidance, are offered.

The Dancehall deejay is currently serving 25 years to life in prison for murder.
