Trinidad and Tobago's newly appointed Defence Minister, Wayne Sturge, has moved to restrict dancehall artist Vybz Kartel's public engagements during his upcoming visit to the country.
Kartel, is scheduled to arrive on May 26 ahead of a performance at the One Caribbean Music Festival on May 31. However, an immigration directive reportedly issued by Sturge bars the artist from attending several planned media and community engagements.
Officials say the restrictions include a ban on appearances on a radio show, a television program, and a press meet on May 27.
Events on May 28, including a school or youth center visit, a meet-and-greet session, a community lunch, and an official welcome, have also been blocked.
In a statement to Guardian Media, Sturge justified the decision by citing concerns about Kartel’s influence on youth and referencing his criminal background.
