US Supreme Court Upholds Counting of Late-Arriving Mail Ballots

The US Supreme Court has ruled that states may count postal ballots received after election day, as long as they were postmarked by election day, in a 5–4 decision upholding a Mississippi law.

The ruling marks a setback for Donald Trump and his allies, who argued that ballots should be received by election day to prevent fraud, while the court’s majority said federal law does not set a receipt deadline.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the opinion, joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s three liberal justices, while the dissent warned the decision could undermine election integrity.

The ruling could impact voting rules in several key states ahead of upcoming midterm elections.
