UPDATE: MONKEY POX PATIENT FOUND

The man said to be Jamaica’s first reported case of Monkeypox, who absconded a health facility earlier today (Sat), has been found by the Clarendon police and taken back to the hospital.

The man was presented to the public health system on July 5, having arrived in Jamaica some five days earlier from the United Kingdom.

He was being held in isolation at the May Pen Hospital, when sometime after noon today (Sat), he left through a bathroom window of the facility and had a car waiting.

The police were called and a search launched.

Head of operations for the Clarendon Police Division Deputy Superintendent Anton-Gur Cardoza, said the man was held at a premises in May Pen.

DSP Cardoza said he cannot divulge at this time, if the man came into contact with other people at the house.

He said the patient was assessed by public health officials and placed back in isolation at the hospital.

DSP Cardoza was also unable to disclose if the patient will be charged in relation to his escape or disclose the status of the person who assisted the patient to escape.

Its understood that additional security measures will be implemented at the hospital.
