Tyler Perry Reveals Black Romance Classics ‘Jason’s Lyric’ and ‘Love Jones’ Inspired New Netflix Film ‘Doing Life’

Filmmaker and media mogul Tyler Perry has revealed that his latest Netflix romantic drama, Doing Life, was directly inspired by the nostalgic, lasting emotions evoked by two foundational 1990s Black cinema classics: Jason’s Lyric (1994) and Love Jones (1997).

In a social media post showcasing the posters for both iconic films, Perry explained that while Doing Life tells its own unique story, he intentionally set out to recreate the emotional depth and connection those movies delivered to audiences decades ago.

Doing Life stars Naomi Baker as Anika, a working mother whose relationship with Carousel (played by Jay Reeves) deepens after he saves her and her unborn child during a violent prison riot, following his release as he attempts to rebuild his life. The film also features A Different World breakout star Cornell Young IV.

The release marks Perry's third Netflix project of 2026, following Joe's College Road Trip in February and Why Did I Get Married Again? in September. Perry recently shared plans to relocate to Puerto Rico with his son in early 2027 and significantly scale back his production workload.
