An international aid effort is being stepped up in southern Turkey and northern Syria following a huge earthquake that has killed more than 7,200 people.

Rescuers are racing to save people trapped beneath the rubble after thousands of buildings collapsed in both countries.

A Turkish journalist told the BBC that people are sending him and other journalists videos, voice notes and their live locations from under the rubble.

The 7.8 magnitude quake struck in the early hours of Monday while people were asleep.

Meanwhile………….The WHO warned on Tuesday that up to 23 million people could be affected by the massive earthquake that has killed thousands in Turkey and Syria.

It said civilian infrastructure and potentially health infrastructure have been damaged across the affected region, mainly in Turkey and northwest Syria.

The WHO considers that the main unmet needs may be in Syria in the immediate and mid-term.
