The National Football League (NFL) announced that The Weeknd will be playing the halftime show at the Super Bowl in Tampa Florida in February 2021.
In a released statement, the artiste said, “We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl, and one can only dream of being in that position, I’m humbled, honored and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year.”
The selection of the 30-year-old singer is in keeping with the N.F.L.’s recent attempts to attract a wider audience by pivoting from the classic rock format dominated by white musicians, to artists with large social media followings who are popular with younger fans and people of color.
The performance may face challenges because of Covid 19 restrictions.
