The U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago has advised American citizens to stay away from U.S. government facilities on the islands, citing possible security threats.
The warning comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Venezuela following deadly U.S. airstrikes in Caribbean waters targeting suspected drug traffickers.
Venezuela lies just a few miles from Trinidad, where residents are mourning two local fishermen believed to have been killed in one of the recent strikes.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of National Security, Roger Alexander, said the embassy’s alert was prompted by threats directed at American citizens, which U.S. authorities suspect may be connected to the regional tensions.
He added that local law enforcement has implemented increased security measures to address any potential risks.
