The St. Mary Chamber of Commerce wants Port Maria, the parish capital declared a disaster zone.

Chamber President, Frederick Young says this would fast-track relief assistance for the parish capital and help businesses and residents get back on their feet.

Jacks River, Baileys Vale to Port Maria and environs were overwhelmed by floodwaters last Tuesday, causing devastation to homes and businesses.
Mr. Young says businesses in Port Maria were badly affected.

He states that support has so far come from agencies, including the Municipal Corporation, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management and the Labour Ministry.
However, the Chamber believes that the designation of Port Maria as a disaster zone would allow for certain Government assistance, which would quickly enable residents and businesses to return to normality.
