Former world number one Serena Williams was given a hero’s farewell last night, after what was likely her final appearance at the US Open.

It comes after she went down 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 to Ajla Tomljanovic in third round action in the women’s singles event.

Williams, who last month revealed she would be evolving away from tennis, gave a heartfelt post match speech, where she thanked her supporters.

Action in the men’s draw, saw defending champion Daniil Medvedev beating Chinese qualifier Wu Yibing in three sets to set up a fourth round meeting with Australia’s Nick Kyrios.
