Senator Dr Elon Thompson warned that online attacks on the speaker of the house Juliet Holness show cyberbullying is being masked as political commentary.
Speaking during debate on Cybercrimes Act amendments, he said Jamaica’s online political culture is blurring the line between criticism and coordinated abuse.
Thompson stressed that public scrutiny of leaders is essential but noted many, including himself, face harsh personal attacks for their views.
He added the proposed law is not to shield politicians but to address growing digital hostility highlighted after the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority debate controversy.
