The Public Defender has found that the constitutional rights of Rastafarian woman Nzinga King were violated, in relation to claims that her locks were cut by a police officer while at a lock-up in Clarendon.
In a report released today, Arlene Harrison Henry recommended that Miss King be compensated for damages.
The Public Defender also recommended that damages in tort be awarded for the assault committed by the police officer.
It’s also being recommended that Miss King’s cellular phone be replaced, and the SIM card from the phone wilfully damaged by the police be returned to her.
The Public Defender noted further that a portion of the fines paid by Miss King should be returned, as she was wrongfully fined $2,000 for each offense when the ceiling was $1,000 each. As such Miss King is entitled to recover $4,000 from the state.
