Prime Minister Andrew Holness has defended the National Housing Trust’s (NHT) decision to tie its subsidies to the income of beneficiaries.

This, after the Opposition, expressed concern about the removal of subsidies for disabled people and some civil servants.

The NHT has indicated that under its new policy, income is the sole determinant of the interest rate subsidy applied to mortgagors.

Speaking today at the signing of an agreement with Arc properties for the contribution of several housing units to the new social housing programme, the Prime Minister said for government to be efficient, subsidies must be linked to income.

Mr. Holness noted that the move by NHT to change its policy on subsidies is in line with the government’s policies.
