Share

Tribute have been pouring in following news of the death of Reggae singer Junior Byles. Byles died at hospital yesterday. In expressing condolences to his loved ones and colleagues, Culture and Entertainment Minister Olivia Grange described Byles as one of Jamaica’s great roots-reggae artistes.

Minister Grange said, “Junior’s contribution helped to create the potent force that Reggae music has become in the world. In recording some of Roots-Reggae’s greatest songs, he rubbed shoulders with some of music’s brightest and best throughout years from the 1960’s when he entered the business.

As for the Prime Minister, he wrote that "Junior Byles was a voice of the people, a reflection of struggle, and a messenger of hope. His work with legendary producer Lee “Scratch” Perry in the 1970s played a powerful role in the growth of reggae and gave the world a deeper understanding of Jamaica’s soul."

He also wrote: “He who seeks of only vanity, And no love for humanity, Shall fade away, fade away.”

These words remain a powerful reminder that love of the people is the ultimate expression of character.

Byles was 77 years old.

Minister Grange noted that she will be assisting with funeral arrangements for Byles.
