Fugees star Pras Michel is facing both a serious health battle and looming legal troubles.
The rapper whose real name is Prakazrel Samuel Michel recently underwent emergency surgery for colon cancer, delaying his sentencing in a major federal conspiracy case.
Michel's legal team confirmed the surgery in a statement, saying he was “unable to attend his scheduled hearing” and is now focused on recovery. The cancer diagnosis had not been made public prior to this announcement. His sentencing was originally scheduled for last month but is now set for October 3.
Pras was convicted earlier this year on multiple conspiracy charges, including failing to register as an agent of China.
The "Ghetto Supastar" artiste faces up to 22 years in prison. Federal prosecutors are also seeking nearly $65 million in forfeiture, alleging he received more than $100 million from Malaysian billionaire, Jho Low. Authorities say the money was part of schemes to influence U.S. officials and to push for the return of a Chinese national to China.
Adding a little twist to the plot, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Donald Trump is considering commuting Pras’ sentence.
While Trump hasn’t commented publicly, Pras’ team says they are “exploring all options” and remain “optimistic.”
Pras and Trump go back decades, as Trump even appeared on Pras’ 1998 debut album Ghetto Supastar in a voicemail cameo.
