Pope Francis, the 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church, passed away, earlier today (Easter Monday, April 21), according to an official statement from Cardinal Kevin Farrell.
Francis, the first Latin American pope, was known for his progressive voice and focus on social justice, especially his advocacy for the poor and marginalized.
His health had been declining in recent months, following a hospital stay for pneumonia in February.
Just one day before his passing, he delivered an Easter message calling for peace in Gaza and around the world.
Francis leaves behind a legacy of compassion, reform, and global influence, both inside and outside the Church.
Celebs such as Barack Obama, Eva Longoria, Antonio Banderas, Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Fallon, King Charles III and Queen Camilla expressed sorrow at the Pope’s passing.
