Pharrell Williams is being sued by his former Neptunes partner, Chad Hugo, over alleged financial misconduct.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in California on Friday, claims that Williams withheld money and failed to provide proper accounting for their company’s funds.
Hugo, who describes himself as the principal composer, arranger, and producer for the Neptunes, has worked with Williams since the early 1990s. Together, they produced numerous hits and performed as part of N.E.R.D., alongside Sheldon “Shay” Haley.
The dispute centers on N.E.R.D. Music, LLC, a company they formed in 2014.
In response, a representative for Williams said an accounting review is already underway and suggested the lawsuit may be premature. They noted that Williams has acted in good faith and intends to resolve the matter, while respecting his long-standing partnership with Hugo.
