New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a new “Click-to-Cancel” rule aimed at protecting consumers from subscription traps and hidden fees.
Under the rule, businesses must make it just as easy to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up, with companies facing fines if they use complicated cancellation processes.
The city is also suggesting stricter rules requiring businesses to clearly display the full price of goods and services upfront, including mandatory fees.
Officials estimate the measures could save New Yorkers up to US 162.5 million dollars each year and are expected to take effect on October 1.
