Netflix has acquired movie company Warner Bros and by extension, HBO Max and HBO in a deal worth approximately US$82.7 billion.

A Netflix press release said, “This acquisition brings together two pioneering entertainment businesses, combining Netflix’s innovation, global reach and best-in-class streaming service with Warner Bros.’ century-long legacy of world-class storytelling. Beloved franchises, shows and movies such as The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, The Wizard of Oz and the DC Universe will join Netflix’s extensive portfolio, including Wednesday, Money Heist, Bridgerton, Adolescence and Extraction, creating an extraordinary entertainment offering for audiences worldwide.”

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said that the movie and tv-show site’s mission has “ always been to entertain the world,” and shared that the access the merger will bring to the Warner Bros.’ “incredible library of shows and movies” from classics like Casablanca and Citizen Kane to modern titles such as Harry Potter Friends along with Netflix staples Stranger Things and Squid Game”, they’ll be able to do that even better.

The acquisition is expected to optimize plans for HBO and Netflix consumers, with enhanced viewing options and expanded access to content.

The transaction is expected to be officially completed in late 2026.
