Influential international music producer Irv Gotti has died.
Gotti, whose real name is Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr. and who was the co-founder of Murder Inc., passed away yesterday (February 5) at the age of 54.
His family confirmed his death via Instagram. In a heartfelt statement, they celebrated his impact on hip-hop and R&B, his passion for music, and his enduring legacy.
Gotti rose to prominence in the 90s and early 2000s, working with the likes of DMX, Ja Rule, Ashanti, and Jay Z, just to name a few.
The “What’s Love” producer was an A&R at Def Jam before he founded Murder Inc. Records with his brother Chris.
Irv Gotti produced numerous hits, including Ja Rule and Jennifer Lopez’ “I’m Real” and “Ain’t It Funny.” He also produced Ashanti and Ja Rule’s hit “Always on Time,” and Ashanti, as a solo artist, charted with “Foolish,” “Rain on Me,” and “Mesmerize.”
Tributes from the music community poured in, with Ja Rule, Fat Joe, The Game, and others honouring his contributions.
Lyor Cohen, former Def Jam executive, called him “one of the most creative soldiers of hip-hop.”
