Dancehall drama turned up the volume this week after Vybz Kartel publicly distanced himself from longtime hype man MC Nuffy following a heated online rant over the Grammy Awards.
The flare-up came after Keznamdi won Best Reggae Album for BLXXD & FYAH over the weekend, edging out a competitive field that included Lila Iké with Treasure Self Love, Jesse Royal’s No Place Like Home, Mortimer’s From Within, and Kartel’s own Heart & Soul.
Clearly unimpressed, Nuffy jumped on social media, questioning both the Recording Academy’s credibility and Keznamdi’s musical journey, comments that didn’t sit well with reggae and dancehall fans, many of whom called the rant disrespectful.
Kartel quickly entered the chat yesterday (February 3), issuing a firm statement clarifying that only his manager and legal counsel are authorized to speak on his behalf.
While the "Fever" artiste still referred to Nuffy as his brother and official MC, Kartel made it clear that hype does not equal authority when it comes to business or brand matters.
Soon after, Nuffy hit the brakes and issued an apology to Kartel and the Recording Academy, admitting his comments were made in the heat of the moment. He avoided naming Keznamdi directly but apologized to the winner of the category, taking full responsibility, and expressed regret for any offense caused.
