Mayor of Montego bay Richard Vernon has issued a stern warning to vendors at the Old Shoe Arcade in Montego Bay over illegal alterations, squatting, and criminal activity within the market space.
Mr. Vernon accused some vendors of damaging public property by removing iron fencing to create storefronts facing the sidewalk, warning that offenders could face closure if the structures are not restored.
The mayor also raised concerns about prostitution, murders, improper garbage disposal, and unauthorized occupancy inside the arcade, saying only a small percentage of shops are being used for legitimate business.
Despite the issues, the St James Municipal Corporation says plans remain in place to upgrade the facility while allowing vendors to continue operating from temporary spaces.
