Mason Greenwood Cleared to Play for Jamaica After Gaining Citizenship

Share

Football Lovers, there might be some more hope for our Reggae Boyz!
Former Manchester United player, Mason Greenwood, is now eligible to represent Jamaica after officially receiving citizenship and clearance from the English FA. The 23-year-old, who last played for England in 2020, qualifies to switch allegiances under FIFA rules, having made only one senior appearance before turning 21.
Greenwood’s international career stalled after being dropped from the England squad in 2020 for breaching COVID-19 protocols, followed by a 2022 arrest on serious charges. Those charges were dropped in 2023 due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence.
Now playing for Marseille, Greenwood had a strong debut season in Ligue 1, scoring 22 goals and registering six assists.
According to The Sun, Jamaica’s head coach Steve McClaren has been in regular contact with Greenwood and believes the player is eager to join the Reggae Boyz. He could make his debut as early as next month in World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago.
Greenwood joins a growing list of UK-born players being recruited by Jamaica as the team builds toward the 2026 World Cup.
