Masicka on Dancehall in Jamaica

Share

Masicka passed through the US-based hip hop radio station Hot 97 recently to chat with Ebro of the popular morning show Ebro In The Morning. The deejay discussed many hot topics, ranging from mentorship within the dancehall community to the conversation about dancehall music’s influence on music around the world.   On the latter topic, Ebro noted the clear influence that Jamaican artistes have on world music but expressed his wish for them to stop chasing US fame and sounds and tap more into the African market because of the similarities and cultural significance in the diasporas. Ebro went as far as to reference afrobeats powerhouse Burna Boy by saying when he debuted, his sound was dancehall leaning. Masicka echoed this statement by noting the success of afrobeats artistes and attributing it to the investment they made in creating sounds from their culture. The deejay shared, “Even the music as mainstream as it is, you still feel the connection to Africa.” Masicka is one of the latest artistes to be added to Hot 87’s SummerJam con-cert. The event will take place on June 20th at the Prudential Center.
