Local Clinics Warn Mandatory Paternity Testing Would Lead To Violence

The issue of mandatory DNA testing at birth in Jamaica is a complex and sensitive matter, as it raises concerns about social, legal, and ethical implications. While some argue that such measures could help address paternity disputes and ensure accurate parental records, others highlight the potential for unintended consequences, including increased gender-based violence and illegal abortions.

Gavin Oliver, managing director of "Who’s Your Daddy," a paternity testing clinic in New Kingston, shared insights into the challenges surrounding paternity testing in Jamaica.

According to him, many cases involve paternity misallocation—situations where women are uncertain about the biological father of their child—rather than intentional fraud. He also noted instances where clients request falsified results out of fear for their safety, underscoring the societal tensions such revelations can create.
