American singer and actress Lauryn Hill has been hit with a lawsuit by her Fugees bandmate, Pras Michel.
The lawsuit, filed this morning (October 1), alleges that the “Ex-Factor” singer secretly took 40% of the tour revenue before distributing the one-third split owed to each member of the three-person band.
According to Pras, Hill defrauded him during the group’s shortened 2023 tour and exploited his mounting legal bills to persuade him to join the tour under false promises. Michel also claims that Hill used his financial struggles to her advantage, promising him a lucrative deal while allegedly planning to "make a big score for herself by generating millions" from the tour.
In the lawsuit, Pras blames Hill for the aborted 2024 tour, which was cancelled in August, a few days before it was to begin.
The lawsuit, which starts in a dramatic style, reads, “Betrayals are always sinister, but the closer the betrayer, the greater the evil. Some say that God gives you friends to make up for your family. The Lord must have been off the day he paired Lauryn Hill with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, the plaintiff in this action, because the betrayal among the forged Fugees family has risen to mythic proportions. This is their tale of woe.”
The lawsuit includes numerous jabs at the “Miseducation” singer, which includes claims that she turned down a $5 million offer to play at Coachella due to a “bruised ego” as well as being four hours late for a recent Kenya performance.
