The Labour and Social Security Ministry has introduced a digital process for distributing cash assistance to needy Jamaicans.

The ministry launched its Covid-19 Cash Assistance Programme on Tuesday (December 21).

The cash transfer distribution programme is being facilitated by Wi-Pay Jamaica Limited through its network of outlets across the island.

27,357 Jamaicans who are not on any government social assistance programme are being given a one off cash assistance.

The $16,000 will be paid in two tranches, starting this week.

The one hundred and fifty five million dollar provision is a grant, courtesy of the World Food Programme through contribution from the Canadian government.

This digital process will remove some of the challenges faced by beneficiaries.

Labour Minister Karl Samuda says the ministry wants to reach people.

He says the initiative marks the start of a new strategy for dealing with the transfer of resources to the most vulnerable.
