Dancehall artiste Kranium has revealed that American pop star Jason Derulo was originally set to feature on his breakout hit “Nobody Has to Know,” but the collaboration did not move forward after Kranium requested a change to one lyric.
Speaking in an interview with radio host Shani Kulture, Kranium said Derulo’s verse was impressive, but one line raised cultural concerns because of how the phrase is viewed within Jamaican culture.
Kranium said he reached out to Derulo to explain his concerns and asked for the lyric to be changed, but Derulo declined the request.
The 2013 hit later received an official remix featuring American R&B singer Ty Dolla $ign, which helped propel the track onto the Billboard charts and earn platinum certification in the United States.
“Nobody Has to Know” remains one of Kranium’s biggest international successes and a song that helped expand his reach beyond the dancehall audience.
