Kingston’s entryway has been transformed into a bold artistic statement with the official unveiling of the newly redesigned Flag Roundabout near Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA). Revealed on Friday, June 26, the project celebrates Kingston’s status as a UNESCO Creative City and adds a vibrant cultural landmark to the capital.
At the center of the roundabout is a striking mural titled “Traffic Blockin’”, created by renowned Jamaican artist Matthew McCarthy, a 2019 Prime Minister’s Youth Award recipient. McCarthy collaborated with fellow artists Suzanna Missenburger, Joshua Solas, Kokab ZD, and Taj Francis, with production support from Travis “Habibi” Bailey and Dean Sutherland. The installation was executed in partnership with Kingston Creative.
Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Hon. Olivia “Babsy” Grange, applauded the effort, especially the support from airport operator PAC Kingston Airport Limited (PACKAL). She described the project as a powerful example of private investment fueling Jamaica’s creative industries.
“This is a continuation of our mission to share Jamaica’s stories through vibrant visual expression,” said Minister Grange. She noted the government’s significant investment, over $80 million, in mural projects as part of a broader strategy to support the cultural and entertainment sectors. She also hinted at an upcoming mural initiative in Ocho Rios.
The roundabout mural follows a growing tradition of turning public spaces into creative showcases, including a previous installation at NMIA in 2019 honoring the Windrush generation.
