Roberta Flack, the Grammy Award-winning singer renowned for her soulful hits such as "Killing Me Softly with His Song" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," has passed away at the age of 88. She died peacefully on Monday surrounded by her family.
Flack made history by becoming the first artist to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in two consecutive years: in 1973 for "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and in 1974 for "Killing Me Softly with His Song."
In 2016, Flack suffered a stroke, and in 2022, she was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which led to her retirement from performing.
Beyond her musical achievements, Flack was a dedicated educator and philanthropist.
She founded the Roberta Flack School of Music at the Hyde Leadership Charter School in the Bronx, providing free music education to underprivileged students.
