The Jamaica Environment Trust, JET, has expressed concern about major road works in Portland, that reportedly got approval from the National Environment Planning Agency, NEPA, without observation of protocol.

It says a comprehensive environmental impact assessment, EIA, was not done and there was no consultation with the public.

JET further states that stakeholders have expressed their concerns to their member of parliament, but have received no response.

JET notes that road works are generally disruptive, and if not properly assessed, implemented and monitored, can result in significant negative environmental and social impacts on surrounding areas.

Chief Executive Officer of JET, Dr. Theresa Rodriguez-Moodie, says it is not yet clear what guided this permit or how it is to be monitored.
