According to Evon Mullings, general manager of the Jamaica Music Society (JAMMS), which is The Jamaican performance rights organization, members are losing millions of dollars in royalty payments, and the government has been chastised for “failure to protect artistes and musicians.”
Mr Mullings noted that legal provisions to be included in Jamaica’s Copyright Law, have been stuck at the Attorney General’s Department since early 2016, depriving musicians of royalty earnings.
He claims that, despite the active steps taken internationally and incorporated into the legislation of most countries to boost the legal protection afforded to performers, Jamaica has failed to take comparable steps.
The International Copyright Treaties, which are intended to protect performers, have been enacted by Jamaica.
Mr. Mullings is imploring the government to take action to rectify the situation..
