jamican Government Points to Cuba for end of Medical Programme

Share

Jamaica said Cuba ended the decades-long medical programme after refusing to accept changes required to comply with Jamaican laws and international labour conventions.

A government review found Cuban doctors were paid through Cuban authorities rather than directly, and some did not hold their own passports, raising legal concerns.

Jamaica said it tried for months through diplomatic discussions to restructure the arrangement so workers would be paid directly and have control of their travel documents.

When no formal response came from Cuba, the Government said it could not continue the programme under the existing terms, despite valuing the contribution of Cuban medical personnel.
