James Van Der Beek, the actor best known for Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, has died at age 48 after a battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer.
His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, confirmed his passing yesterday (February 11) in an emotional Instagram post, sharing that he died peacefully and was surrounded by love.
The actor was diagnosed in August 2023 following a routine colonoscopy and later spoke openly about the physical, emotional and financial toll of his illness.
Van Der Beek remained candid and hopeful throughout his cancer journey, often reflecting on gratitude, personal growth and his devotion to his wife and their six children. His final public interview aired in December, where he said the experience had required more strength than he ever imagined.
Following his death, a GoFundMe set up to support Kimberly and their children surpassed $1 million, with donations pouring in from fans and fellow celebrities. Van Der Beek is remembered not only for his iconic roles, but for his openness, resilience and deep love for his family.
